Arrival

A Memorable Adventure Exploring Some Cities in Manila As third-year tourism students, we were all buzzing with excitement about our upcoming SOLAS-Basic training in Manila. The training was set for June 2, but we couldn't contain our enthusiasm and decided to head to the city a few days early. With our travel plans solidified by May 31, the night before our flight was filled with restless anticipation. Finally, on the afternoon of June 2, we boarded our flight from Puerto Princesa International Airport, taking off at 5:25 PM.

On Marikina

Upon our arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) that night, we quickly contacted our pre-arranged driver, who whisked us away to Marikina City, where we would be staying for the next three days at my friend’s aunt’s house. After settling in and resting briefly, we ventured out to explore Marikina. The cleanliness of the city impressed us as we wandered around, though fatigue quickly set in. We decided to hang in a nearby park, picking up snacks from 7/11 to enjoy while we took in the atmosphere. The next day, my friend’s aunt took us to the bustling Palengke (market) of Marikina. The vast array of vendors and the number of shoe sellers caught my eye much more than what I had seen back in Palawan. In the afternoon, we ventured to SM Marikina, where we decided to try the local pedicab a fun alternative to the tricycles we were used to. The mall, however, felt quite loud and chaotic, reminiscent of Manila’s vibrancy. Later, we set our sights on the Venice Grand Canal, a place I had long wanted to see. While waiting for our Grab ride, we snapped photos and soaked in the ambiance. Stepping into the Venice Grand Canal was surreal, it felt like stepping into another world, far removed from the Philippines. After capturing countless pictures, we took a break at McDonald's to recharge before heading to Bonifacio Global City (BGC).

Arriving at BGC was thrilling. We navigated the bustling streets for nearly 30 minutes in search of the iconic 3D screens. The towering skyscrapers surrounding us were mesmerizing, showcasing the modernity of the city. Eventually, we found the right spot and patiently waited for a chance to snap our photos, all while enjoying the vibrant energy of the city. However, our search for an affordable place to eat proved fruitless, as most dining options were beyond our budget.

Venice Grand Canal Mall

Reflecting on our adventures, I realized how each moment spent in BGC and Marikina deepened my appreciation for urban life and its unique charm. The contrast between the lively, modern infrastructure of BGC and the serene cleanliness of Marikina was fascinating. My recommendation for future travelers is to explore beyond the main attractions like the local markets and parks often hold the most memorable experiences.
After a long day filled with exploration, we decided to return to Marikina for a well-deserved rest. This trip was not just about the training; it was a beautiful reminder of the connections we forge, the places we explore, and the stories we collect along the way. Each moment spent in these cities enriched our journey, and I look forward to more adventures in the future.
